Senior Freelance Gen AI/LLM Engineer – Remote Role

Join projectsbyif as a Senior/Lead Freelance Gen AI and LLM Engineer on a high-impact 6-month engagement. This remote role offers the opportunity to work with experienced AI/ML engineers, data scientists, designers, and product managers to prototype and develop GenAI/LLM components for innovative city services. You'll combine hands-on technical development with strategic advisory responsibilities, helping municipalities and urban teams implement cutting-edge generative AI solutions.

Role Overview

This is a hybrid technical and advisory position where you'll serve as the team's generative AI expert. Your responsibilities will include:

• Design & Development: Build and test GenAI/LLM solution components alongside cross-functional team members and city stakeholders
• Technical Leadership: Provide expert guidance, code reviews, and coaching to city teams developing their own AI prototypes
• Solution Scoping: Research appropriate models and technologies, assess feasibility, and design pragmatic GenAI/LLM solutions aligned with project constraints
• Risk & Governance: Contribute to workshops, advise on skills development, and help cities identify and mitigate risks from generative AI deployment
• Problem Solving: Work independently to solve technical challenges while collaborating across disciplines

Required Skills & Experience

You must demonstrate:

• Proven hands-on experience building production LLM applications, including chatbots, AI agents, document extraction/summarization systems, and RAG-based architectures
• Strong Python programming skills combined with proficiency in LLM orchestration frameworks (e.g., LangChain, LlamaIndex)
• Deep knowledge of LLM safeguards and guardrails, including hallucination mitigation and human-in-the-loop system design
• Experience working collaboratively on shared codebases using Git and version control best practices
• Solid background in API integration, data wrangling, ETL pipelines, and data analysis
• Track record of rapid prototyping and MVP delivery with focus on learning and iteration over perfection
• Ability to scope solutions pragmatically based on available data, skills, and contextual constraints
• Comfort navigating uncertainty and incomplete information while clearly communicating assumptions
• Strong collaborative mindset with ability to work effectively across multidisciplinary teams

• Commitment: Minimum 4 days per week
